Abstract

Background: Most stroke survivors will be cared for by family caregivers with limited training. Families actively involved in care feel more prepared for the new responsibilities of caring for the stroke survivor. Empowerment and self-efficacy are very important, which are frequently neglected. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the family-centered empowerment model on stroke patients and their caregivers. Methods: Quasi-experimental design was used in this study. Setting: This study was conducted in ICU in Nasr city insurance hospital. Sample: Fifty stroke patients and fifty of their caregivers attending the previous setting were included in the study. Tools: five tools were used in this study; 1) & 2) Interviewing questionnaires were used to obtain socio-demographic data from patients and their caregivers,3) chronic stroke disease self-efficacy instrument for patients. 4) Revised scale of caregivers' self-efficacy. 5) Caregiver burden interview. Results: The results show that there was a significant difference between self-efficacy categories pre & post-empowerment among patients and their caregivers. All caregivers obtained a severe burden level pre-empowerment while post empowerment two-thirds of them fall into a mild to moderate level. Conclusions: It can conclude that it is possible to increase the level of self-efficacy, self-esteem, perceived threat, and finally burden level of caregivers and facilitate the way for being healthy in this period using the family-based empowerment model regularly and consistently. Recommendation: the study recommended that empowerment programs should be established to prepare stroke patients and their caregivers to be carried out, mainly in the initial activities.
