يحاول هذا البحث دراسة مفردة بيئية ثقافية مهمة، هي "الضب"، وفق منهج وصفيٍّ تحليليّ، قوامه عينة عمدية، الظنُّ فيها أن تمثل مجتمع البحث تمثيلاً دقيقًا، والاستقراء شبه الکامل للأمثال العربية التي ذُکِر فيها الضب. من وجهة نظر "النقد البيئي"، ذلک الحقل المعرفي الجديد المهتم بدراسة العلاقة بين الأدب والبيئة، والذي ينبه المتخصصون فيه إليه إلى أن البيئة غير البشرية حاضرة لا کأداة تأطير وحسب، وإنما هي في الصميم من التاريخ الإنساني-الذي هو في النهاية جزء من التاريخ الطبيعي-ومن ثم من التکوين الثقافي البشري. وتألف البحث من ثلاثة مباحث، بين مقدمة وخاتمة: جاء المبحث الأول عن تجريد المصطلح، والثاني عن الوظائف الفنية للضب في السرد والشعر والبلاغة، وتحديدًا: الضب والتأطير الحکائي، ورمزية الضب، والضب في شعر المدح وشعر الهجاء، وفي التشبيه والکناية. أما المبحث الثالث ففي صور الضب وأدواره ونطاقات فعله الثقافي. 
This research attempts to study an important environmental and cultural object , which is "the Dabb", according to a descriptive-analytical approach, consisting of a deliberate sample, in which it is assumed to represent the field of the study accurately , and the almost complete extrapolation of the Arabic proverbs in which the Dabb was mentioned. From the point of view of "environmental criticism", That new field of knowledge interested in studying the relationship between literature and the environment, which specialists in it note that the non-human environment is present not only as a framing tool, but at the core of human history, which is in the end a part of natural history, and therefore of human cultural formation. The research consisted of three sections, between an introduction and a conclusion: the first topic came about the abstraction of the term, and the second was about the technical functions of the Dabb in narration, poetry and rhetoric, specifically: the Dabb and narrative framing, the symbolism of the Dabb, and the Dabb in praise poetry and satire poetry, and in simile and metonymy. The third is in the characteristics of the Dabb, its roles and the scope of its cultural action
