Abstract

This study was conducted at Sakha Agric. Res. Station, A.R.C. during 2015 and 2016 seasons. Five lines (1- TX2-2, 2-
TX3042, 3- 2002-39, 4- 2002-41 and 5- ICS 693) and three testers (1- Piper, 2- Giza1 and 3-Port said) were crossed in line x
testers analysis to investigate combing ability in forage sorghum which had fifteen genotypes of fodder sorghum were used in
this investigation for yield and yield components. Interaction between line and tester was significant for most studied traits.
Mean performance of evaluated top crosses were significantly superior in total fresh yield (kg/plot) were (2002-41x Giza1)
and (Ics 693x Port said) 131.7 and 131.7 kg.plot-1, respectively, besides the significance superiority of the hybrids (TX3042 x
Port said). General combining ability effects (G.C.A) for lines and tester results indicated that line (Ics 693) was among the
best combiner for fresh forage yield and the total yield. The line TX3042, showed significant elite combing ability for dry
forage yield and total dry yield. As for testers, Giza1 was the best combiner for fresh forage yield and total fresh yield.
Specific combing ability effects (SCA) for the fifteen studied crosses were significant positive Also, TX2-2x Piper exhibited
positive significant (SCA) for dry forage yield of the second cutting and total dry yield .The highest significant positive
(SCA) effects were expressed by the hybrid TX3042 x Port said for fresh forage yield of all three cuttings and total yield. In
addition, the hybrid 2002-41x Giza1 showed significant positive (SCA) effects for fresh yield and the total green yield.
Finally, it seems that the contribution of line specific effects was more important than the general effects of lines and testers.
Top crosses 2002-41x Giza1and Ics 693x Port said conceder as the best crosses under this study, so using it in breeding
program for high yielding (total fresh yield and total dry yield) would be useful.
