Abstract

The present study comprises a massive one week survey at South Sinai governorate in two production units of Sinai Manganese Company. The study included environmental and occupational assessment of air pollutants and occupational hazards. As well as stacks' emissions evaluations, At ferromanganese plant, results of respirable dust and its content of manganese and free silica were below threshold limit values [TLVs], also gases exposure were far below permissible levels. Noise and heat stress levels had some apparent exceptional higher levels than permissible ones. Environmental gases concentrations were far below permissible levels, whereas about 50% of total suspended particulate were higher than permissible levels. Manganese airborne dust levels were quite lower than permissible levels. All results of emissions from stacks were below permissible levels. At Gypsum plant, results showed varying trend. The respirable dust levels were higher than TLV whereas noise and heat stress levels were lower than permissible levels. About 25% of total suspended particulate levels were higher than permissible levels. Stacks' emissions of total particulate were slightly higher than permissible emissions limits. It was recommended to improve working environments, check control measures efficiency, and to perform specific medical examinations in exposed workers to manganese and gypsum respirable dust.
