Abstract

Urinary incontinence [UI] is a prevalent problem among elderly persons. Ul isn't a result of advancing age, nor it is a disease, it is a symptom of existing environmental, psychological, drug or physical disturbances and can become a catastrophic event when it interferes with mobility, sociability, and ability to remain in one's home. This study was carried out in all six governmental elderly homes in Alexandria. The main results revealed that the prevalence of Ul among institutionalized elderlies was 34.8%. There was a significant correlation between age and the occurrence of Ul. UI is almost three times prevalent in women [74.3%] as compared to men [27.7%]. The majority of the incontinent clients were totally dependent in performing ADL [Activities of deily living] and had significant cognitive impairment. Certain drugs were found to be significantly related to UI such as diuretics, sedatives and neurological drugs.
