Abstract

The present study is part one of serial studies on the effect of the insecticide contra/insect 500/50 E.C. on the behavioral, physiological, biochemical, and histological parameters of the fresh and salt water Tilapia species. The Contra/Insect insecticide is a broad-spectrum insecticide combining the joint action of two well-known insecticides, chlopyrifos and cypermethrin. During this part of the study, an attempt has been made to estimate the lethal toxicity of the contra /insect and its effect on the behavior of the saltwater fish; Orechromis spilurus. Healthy fish were exposed to different concentrations of the insecticide that ranged from 0.01 to 1.5mg/L for 96hours. Water in the aquaria was renewed every 24 hours to standardize the water conditions for the fish. The aquaria water was monitored for temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen twice daily during the experimental period to observe any significant fluctuations that might influence the study results. The computed results indicated that the insecticides' 48 hours LC50 and LC90 for the Oreochromis spilurus were 0.3764 mg/L and 0.9033 mg/L. The study observations showed remarkable changes in the fish behavior, characterized by restlessness, aggressiveness, uncoordinated movements, loss of equilibrium and air gulping. Some of the fish which were exposed to lower concentrations of the insecticide; 0.1 mg/L and less; tended to recover while others developed uncontrolled, and irreversible conditions and died. In the present study, water quality variables were standardized, which indicated that there was no significant effect of these measured variables on the study toxicity levels and behavior investigations.
