Attitudes and Potentials of New Students Joining Medical Colleges of King Faisal University in Dammam, Saudi Arabia

Abstract

Curriculum planning and innovative changes in medical education cannot be established without involvement of the main part of the educational process namely the students. Objective: To study the attitudes, Interests, and potentials of the new applicants to the colleges of medicine and medical sciences in King Faisal University. Methods: a questionnaire was given to 193 high school graduate girls who were just accepted in these colleges. Results: The mean age of the students was 18.1± 0.77 yrs. The mean high school general average [HSG] was 95.29 + 4.02% for the whole group; it was [97.98 +2.20], [95.212.90], [91.84 4.25], and [94.36 ± 3.47] for medicine, Medical lab technology, nursing, and respiratory therapy respectively. Concerning the written admission exam, 81.9% of students thought it was of suitable level. The majority of the students chose [70.5%] their specialty because of personal interest. English language was anticipated as a problem by 38.2% of them. Heaviness of the material to be studied was the second most common problem [31.1%]. In spite of that 62.2% of students refused strongly to study in Arabic. Most [86.0%] of students expect their college instructor to give them only part [40-80%] of the required material. There was a significant correlation between high school general average and the facing of difficulty in the written admission exam [p < 0.05]. Conclusion: the new group of students presenting to KFU have high HSG, were happy with the admission exam. have genuine personal interest in their specialty and have great fears of English but do not want to study Arabic.
