Abstract

El-Ghardaqa [Hurgada] city occupies the north eastern part of the Egyptian coast of the Red Sea between latitude 27° 05' and 27° 30' N and Longitude 33° 37' and 34° O' E. Seasonal and regional variations of temperature, salinity, pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, oxidizable organic matter and total suspended matter in the coastal water in front of El-Ghardaqa were studied. The surface water temperature ranged between 17.25-28.84°C and it was mostly influenced by air temperature. The maximum monthly average salinity value in July was 41.54% and the minimum lowest value was 41.35%. This high salinity value reflects the unique character of the Red Sea as the most saline body of water in the world ocean. The pH content fluctuated between 8.15 and 8.17. Total alkalinity values ranged from 2.891-3.037 meq 1-1. Dissolved oxygen shows values ranged from 5.42 to 5.82 mg O2 l-1. Oxidizable organic matter content fluctuated from 0.58-1.0 mg 02 I-1. Suspended matter contents ranged from 26.90-29.01 mg l-1. When we compare our data with those collected of more than 10 years, we found a decrease in dissolved oxygen content and an increase in the values of oxidizable organic matter concentrations, this means that El-Ghardaqa area began to suffer from pollution.
