Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the pattern of utilization of ANC services among teenage pregnant women and factors affecting it. A sample of 200 teenage women [pregnant or recently delivered] were selected from antenatal and postnatal units of El Shatby Maternity Hospital as well as from 3 MCH centers in Alexandria. An interview questionnaire was used to collect data which included sociodemographic characteristics, obstetric and medical risk factors, pattern of utilization of ANC and barriers for receiving care. A scoring system was designed to categorize sociodemographic, obstetric and medical risk factors. The adequacy of in ANC was coded according to the "Kessner index". The results indicate that the initiation and return visits were not satisfactory. The respondents tend to receive inadequate or intermediate ANC. Barriers for receiving care included: long waiting time, transportation difficulties and long distance. Teenage pregnant women who were at sociodemographic, medical and obstetric risk were more likely to have inadequate or intermediate ANC but no significant difference was Cencountered concerning these aspects. The study suggests that early marriage should be forbidden, girl's education should be encouraged, more professional contribution and mass media participation are needed as well as improving access to ANC services.
