This study examined the factors that affect the acceptance, efficacy, and discontinuation of Norplant use among women in Alexandria and Tanta. A total sample of 100 women was selected from women visiting family planning clinics in Alexandria and Tanta, they were users of Norplant who came for its discontinuation. An interview schedule sheet was designed to accomplish the aim of the study. The findings of this study revealed that the majority of women using Norplant who visited family planning clinics at Alexandria and Tanta to discontinue its use had below average knowledge regarding Norplant, and acquired their information from friends or relatives. The initial acceptance of Norplant was considered reasonable, where most women [46% and 38% at Alexandria and Tanta, respectively] were originally intended to use Norplant for 5 years. Discontinuation rate was high where 62% and on 67% of women in Alexandria and Tanta, respectively had insertion for more or less 2 years. No significant relations were found between Alexandria and Tanta women regarding their reasons for discontinuing use of Norplant, their age or parity. The majority of the sample reported that their discontinuation was mostly related to disturbing side effects, their fear of serious complications such as cancer and infertility, and also lack of counseling given at insertion time at clinics regarding Norplant and its possible side effects. The study reflects the need for trained health care providers at family planning clinics, detailed counseling and improving the role of mass media regarding Norplant.
