Abstract

High quality of school health services is one of the most important building blocks of Background. Postpartum hemorrhage is a continuing problem of maternal mortality despite the improvement in medical care of mothers. Objective: we adopted a hospital based case control study design in King Khaled University hospital , Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to identify and quantify the potential importance of risk factors of postpartum hemorrhage through enrolling 500 cases , 114 were considered as cases with blood loss more than 500 cc in vaginal delivery and more than 1000 cc in cases of caesarean sections, the other 386 were considered as controls .Results: From logistic regression analysis the most significant risk factors of postpartum hemorrhage were: obesity: [OR:1.7, 95 %CI:101-2.7], gravidity more than 5 times [OR:1.5, 95 %Cl:1.1-2.0], breech presentation [OR:1.6, 95 %Cl:1.1-2.4], baby weight more than 4kg [OR:1.5, 95 %CI:1.1-2.1] and positive history of caesarean section [OR:3.9, 95 %Cl:1.3-5.8]. On the other hand, first pregnancy below 20 years was also a significant risk factor[OR:1,7, 95 %Cl:1.-2.9] and old parity after 35 years [OR:2.1,95 %CI:1.2-3.0]. Conclusion these data are helpful for identification of high risk groups and can be useful in counseling patients about the advisability of minimizing the complications postpartum hemorrhage, particularly by control of the third stage of labor.
