Abstract

Biodiesel is a renewable fuel derived from vegetable oils. It is non-toxic, biodegradable and non-flammable having a very high flash point making it one of the safest of all alternative fuels. Besides, it runs in most normal diesel engines with little modification to the engine or fuel injection system. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of fueling a tractor diesel engine with different vegetable oil/diesel blends and compare their impact on gaseous and particulate exhaust emission levels. It was found that the different blend percents showed slight variations. Sunflower, soybean and corn oil blends had similar CO and NOx emission trends showing slightly lower CO emissions and higher NOx emissions than diesel oil. In case of cotton oil, there was a marked reduction in both CÓ and NOx emissions. Soot emissions were lower for all biodiesel tested fuels, being significantly lower in case of cotton oil. Engine performed well in all conducted tests when fueled with biodiesel blends and no related fuel problems was observed during the tests. It has been concluded that cotton oil revealed the highest combustion efficiency and lower exhaust emissions compared to diesel oil and other biodiesel blends. In addition, cotton oil is considered the cheapest type of oil in Egypt. Moreover, a blend of 20% was found to be the most recommended economic blend. Consequently, cotton oil offers high promise as an alternative fuel to diesel oil.
