The effect of daily sublethal concentrations of decis [6.25 and 18.75 ppm] for 90 days in drinking water was investigated on the cell mediated and humoral immune responses, hormones and histopathological changes in the thyroid gland of male albino rats. Decis caused a pronounced direct suppressive effect on cellular immunity as illustrated by lymphocyte proliferation to mitogens. Also, humoral immunity as indicated by plaque forming cells [PFC] and total immunoglobulins [Ig] was significant suppressed, while both IgG [mercaptoethanol resistant antibody] and IgM [mercaptoethanol sensitive antibody] were non-significantly deceased. The suppressive effect of decis on the immune response was concentration dependent. The data also showed that plasma triiodothironine level [T] significantly increased only after 30 days of treatment with both concentrations, while thyroxine level [T4] increased at 30 and 90 days. Thyroid gland of rat treated with low level of decis showed most of acini free from the colloid with narrowing in the acini lumenae. In the case of high concentration it showed obliteration and atrophy in most acini.
