Abstract

The study was conducted to assess the perception of 70 Saudi female hypertensive patients regarding their antihypertensive medication according to the health belief model as well as their compliance with their medication before and after counseling sessions. Patients were followed up monthly for 6 months. Results revealed that 24.3 % of the patients were compliant with their medication before counseling, this is compared with 84.3% after counselling. Two independent variables were found to have significance with patients' compliance with medication before counselling, they were patients' satisfaction with provider and clinic and other's experiences. Significant differences were observed regarding patients' perception after counseling in all the studied items. The study highlights the importance of provider – client relationship on compliance and the consideration of the uniqueness of individual patient.
