Abstract

Information about care of newborn is essential to all women. This includes feeding the newborn, bathing, dressing on cord, and care of newborn with colic. Breastfeeding is highly nutritious, easily digested, and protects from many diseases. Sponge bath the baby until the cord falls off. After this, tub baths may be given. This study was carried out on 100 multigravida Saudi women, fifty women were control group and for the other fifty, pre- and post-tests were designed and used for them. For the tested group, educational program was developed about newborn care consisting of 15 pages. This study was conducted over a period of 4 months from October 2002 to January 2003. Women at first were examined about their information and practice on care of their newborns and then help them with the booklet to see by pictures the ideal way for caring of newborn. Then ask them and compare their information and practice between the two times. From the results it showed that there was a significant improvement in both practice and knowledge post-test, and there was a significant difference between control group and tested post-test group. It was recommended that parenthood education program should provide a postpartum educational booklet to all parents including information on baby care.
