Abstract

The present study drives at identifying the role played by media education in developing the skills of children who use the Social Media sites; in attempt to detect children' selective and critical skills and environmental advocacy skills in dealing with the social media sites. This study belongs to the descriptive type of studies that use the media survey method in its two types, both the analytical and the field survey. The study tools are represented in a questionnaire form for a purposive sample of children in the age stage (9-11) years old. It consists of (400) respondents, in addition to a questionnaire form of parents concerning the purposive sample that consists of (400) respondents, and an content analysis form for the two pages of  (MBC3 & Birds of Paradise) on Facebook. The results of the statistical analysis show that there is no statistically significant correlation at (0.05) significance level between children' use of the social media sites and the development of selective and critical skills, as the value of the correlation coefficient is (0.044), which is not statistically significant at (0.4) significant level. There is also a statistically significant inverse correlation at (0.01) significance level between children' use of the social media sites and the development of environmental advocacy skills in the light of media education; since the value of the correlation coefficient is (-0.277), which is a statistically significant value of (0.001). There is also a statistically significant correlation between parental mediation and the skills children acquire in their use of the social media sites. For the previously mentioned, it has been found from the results of the content analysis that the two pages, Birds of Paradise and mbc3 differ in the content presented in the publications concerning environmental advocacy, where the mbc3 page has excelled in the publications related to personal hygiene, environmental issues and campaigns, effective communication, listening, hearings, time organization and management, in addition to the category of spreading creative ideas, while the poor interaction of children has appeared in the environment-related publications. The number of likes and shares on these publications was weak compared to other publications. The researcher recommends working on establishing media education institutions whose primary role is to support and care for children and develop their skills in dealing with digital media, especially social media sites which they are constantly exposed.
