Abstract

Renewable energy is a priority within the economic policy of all countries, because states rely on fossil energy, which has depleted them and created environmental problems, so alternative, clean and environmentally friendly energy had to be sought for use in economic projects, including construction projects, in order to achieve the principle of sustainable development. This study presents the economic importance of using renewable energy sources (biomass energy - solar energy) in providing conventional energy (coal - diesel - natural gas) needed for cement production in Egypt, due to the fact that the cement industry is considered one of the energy-intensive industries, so the use of energy Renewable energy leads to savings in the cost of purchasing and subsidizing fossil fuels (the traditional energy used in the cement industry) amounting to millions of dollars, and the amount of savings in total energy costs when using renewable energy. This study discussed the energy costs needed to produce cement from the year (2012-2016) using conventional fuels and the comparison with the use of renewable energy sources. The results showed the importance of using renewable energy for its efficiency in the cement industry and the low costs needed to provide energy for this industry and achieve economic and environmental benefits. The study reached the following results: 1) There is an economic and environmental impact of statistically significant energy alternatives in the Egyptian cement industry that reflects on costs. 2) There are statistically significant differences between the cost of a ton of cement when using biomass and the cost of a ton of cement when using conventional energy during the period (2012-2016) for the Egyptian energy mix. 3) There are statistically significant differences between the cost of energy used from biomass and the cost of conventional energy in cement production during the period (2012-2016) for the European energy mix. 4) There are statistically significant differences between the cost of cement production when using solar energy and the cost of cement production when using conventional electricity during the period (2012-2016).
