THE SUITABLE CROP PATTERN IN TOSHKA REGION – UPPER EGYPT - UNDER THE CONDITION OF THE AVAILABLE ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES

Abstract

The research was attempting to access the most appropriate crop pattern in Toshka to raise the use of the available environmental resources for agricultural development in the region. It has been shown an existence of scarcity of the current cultivated lands compared with the total area and /or the reclaimed area in the region .where it is not exceeding than 38.600 feddan which represent 7.15% of the total area (540.000) feddan. while the reclaimed area is ​​about 263.600 feddan (48.8 % of the total area). The Sheikh Zayed Canal is considered the main source of water in the region . which was supposed to stretch for about 320 kilometers. but what has been drilled about 60 km including the four branches of the canal. which leads to water scarcity in the region and this affects the productivity of the cultivated crops. The study found the following results: 1. The importance of vegetables cultivation. especially tomatoes. onions. cucumbers. beans. okra. green pepper. 2 - The importance of contain the cropping pattern for some fodder crops as alfalfa and cowpea fodder. 3 - The importance of cultivating important economic crops such as wheat. barley. corn. peanuts and perennial crops such as grapes. palm and olives. 4 – The importance of the re-consider how to manage the available water and land resources in the region to gain the better exploit the potential of the area planted with high profitability crops. 5 - The importance of the use of modern technology such as the use of the irrigation methods (spray - drip) and the use of agricultural mechanization to achieve greater rates of agricultural development in the region. 6 – The variation of the crop cultivation area vary greatly depending on the area studied (current cultivated area – the reclaimed area. which cultivated with the current growing plants or with the suggested plants).
