Abstract

Pre-eclampsia, a hypertensive disorder that affects some pregnants, is considered as a major cause of maternal and fetal death. Inflammation and oxidative stress may contribute to the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia.The aim of this study is to evaluate the values of oxidative stress parameters and inflammatory markers in blood of normal and pre-eclamptic pregnants.
In 25 pre-eclamptic and 25 normotensive pregnant women we determined serum levels of malondialdehyde, peroxynitrite, C-reactive protein, and tumor necrotizing factor alpha. Urinary protein was tested to determine proteinuria. The results show that in pre-eclampsia group; serum malondialdehyde, peroxynitrate, C-reactive protein, and tumour necrotizing factors alpha levels were significantly higher than in normotensive group. Serums malondialdehyde showed significant positive correlation with C-reactive protein (P=0.013) and tumour necrotizing factors alpha (P=0.000). In conclusion; The inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein and tumour necrotizing factors alpha) and oxidative stress markers (malondialdehyde and peroxynitrate) are all increased in pre-eclampsia. This data suggest the possibility of inflammation and oxidative stress in pre-eclampsia.
