Abstract

Background: psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory hyper proliferative skin disease. Angiogenesis play an important role in Psoriasis pathogenesis, occurring even before plaque formation. Angiopoietins play an important role in angiogenesis and hence are described as angiogenic factors, this study aimed to evaluate serum Angiopoietin-2 level in psoriasis vulgaris patients and to evaluate if there is a possible relation between serum Angiopoietin-2 level and the disease activity.
Patients and methods: This is a case control study included 40 participants, 20 ones are patients and other 20 are healthy subjects. Complete general, family, past history was documented, dermatological examination was done to all patients participate in the study. The work has been carried out in accordance with (The Code of Ethics of world Medical Association) for studies involving human.
Results: There is highly significant difference between the studied groups regarding serum angiopoietin 2 level (higher in psoriasis group). In psoriasis group, there is significant positive correlation between serum angiopoietin 2 level and psoriasis area severity index. There is statistically significant difference in serum angiopoietin 2 level and disease course (higher in progressive type).
Conclusions: Angiopoietin 2 is closely associated with the development of microvascular proliferation in psoriasis and its level increase with disease severity. Based on our results, we suggests that potential usefulness of serum Ang2 level as a biomarker of PsV, as well as the significant role of Ang2 in systemic pathological processes in psoriasis.
