Abstract

The waters of Shatt Al-Arab River were examined by determining the content of heavy elements (Ferrous, copper, Bromine, Chromium and zinc) and petroleum hydrocarbons. In addition, 7 parameters were evaluated, including the chloride, phosphate (PO4), sulphate (SO4), nitrate (NO3), total suspended solids (TSS), temperature (°C), and the concentration of hydrogen ions (pH). The atomic absorption spectrometry was used to analyze the targeted heavy metals, whereas the infrared (IR) spectroscopy was used to measure petroleum hydrocarbons. The five heavy metals' values were recorded during 2021, and a slight fluctuation in the concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons was detected. Their values were under the acceptable environmental limits. The levels of TSS (68 mg/l), the highest concentration of Cl (888 mg/l) and SO4 (677 mg/l) were higher than the acceptable environmental limits.
