Fish is one of the important food sources and fish activity contributes an important share to the value of the agricultural sector production Therefore, this study aimed to shed light on fish production in Egypt, the role of its main sources in increasing this production and the possibility of relying more on some sources to meet local consumption and raise the rate of self-sufficiency.
It was found from the study, that the production of fish from various natural sources did not exceed annually in the average period (2000-2019) about 30.15% of Its total fish production, while fish farming participated in the average study period with about 69.85% of the total fish production in Egypt.
The results of the study also indicate that Fish production of natural sources tends to decline, while on the other hand, fish production from Farming sources achieved a statistically significant annual increase of about 8.01 %. It showed also that fish production in Egypt is concentrated in four species: tilapia, mullet, catfish and whitefish, with an estimated production of about 71.60% of the total different fish species from different sources.
The study indicate that while fish production is characterized by relative stability, the seasonality of this production was evident at the level of its most important sources, the trends of which conflicted between some sources.while coincided with some of the others, and that fish production was concentrated in five governorates, which acquired more than 85% of total production.
