As a proportion of the total population, the geriatric population has been steadily increasing over the decades. Being family physicians, we have intimate knowledge of patients' medical, functional, and social problems. Thus, we are in a unique position to assist in the recognition of elder abuse. Abuse of older or dependent patients by their caregivers have received increasing attention over the past decade and deserve the attention of family physicians. Unlike physical and sexual abuse, emotional abuse is difficult to be detected and can leave residents mentally disturbed.
