Abstract

Cisatracurium, a purified form of one of the 10 stereoisomers of atracurium, is a benzylisoquinolinium muscle relaxant which is approximately three times more potent than atracurium. This thesis was planned to be a clinical evaluation of its infusion in comparison with atracurium infusion in geriatric patients undergoing ophthalmic surgeries. It has reasonable onset, duration and recovery time, moreover easily reversed by anticholinesterases without any curarization. It is a cardiovascular stable drug because it does not release histamine as Atracurium even by high doses [8xED95]. It is eliminated by Hofmann elimination mainly so it can be used in geriatric patients with compromised liver or kidney functions. It lowers the intraocular pressure after full relaxation so it can be used in open eye injuries also. Therefore, the unique profile of this muscle relaxant allows for its use in a broad spectrum of surgical patients.
