Abstract

This retrospective study was conducted on 232 patients who had presented by an acute variceal bleeding to Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI) hospital throughout 2010 & 2011.The aim of this work was to study the impact of timing of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and patient's hemodynamics before endoscopy as factors affecting clinical outcome of acute variceal bleeding during hospital stay.Although we succeded to stop bleeding endoscopically in 93% of patients with acute variceal bleeding yet we still had a significant incidence of mortality (22%) from variceal bleeding which was in line with reported international incidence.
