Sialic acid (SA), N-acetyl derivative of neurminic acid, play a central role in the biomedical function of humans, increased sialic acid concentrations have been reported in inflammatory process, cardiovascular disease, chronic renal failure and diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study is to evaluate serum sialic acid level in patient, with type 2 diabetes, with different diabetic complication. The present study was conducted on 58 patients with type 2 diabetes the patient, was divided into3 groups, group 1 (11) complicated diabetics, group 2 (29) patient, with macrovascular complications, group 3 (18) patients with microvascular complications. Serum sialic acid was estimated by quantitative method.Serum sialic acid was higher in complicated diabetics( group 2 & 3) than none complicated,( group 1). The mean level was (19.4 mg/dL) in group 1, (33.3 mg/dL) in group 2 and (30.6 mg/dL) in group 3 and this difference was statistically significant. But the difference between group 2 & 3 was statistically not significant.
