Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a new bleaching gel with low H2O2 concentration, (TiO2) on the enamel surface of teeth activated by Nd:YAG laser as compared to the conventional Zoom2 bleaching procedure in a trial to get lesser side effect. Methodology: 60 non carious extracted teeth were taken for procedure. Teeth were classified as control group, group 2 treated with TiO2 gel and Zoom2 as a light source and group 3 treated with the same gel but activated with 2nd harmonic Nd:YAG as a light source. After preparation, half of each tooth was evaluated by SEM and the other half was evaluated by laser induced fluorescence (LIF) and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) devices. Result: SEM, investigation of group 2 showed distinct erosive pattern with loss of the enamel aprismatic layer and exposed rod end depressions of various depths while in group 3 showed fewer morphological alteration were noticed as compared to the control group. LIF examination revealed that the fluorescence intensity of group 2 was higher than that of group 3 and group 1. Using the LIBS device, mineral content in the enamel surface of group 1 and group 3 appeared higher than that of group 2. Conclusion: laser activated bleaching TiO2 had a better bleaching effect on the enamel surface as compared to Zoom2 bleaching light activation.
