Abstract

Background: The frequency of obesity and overweight continues to increase significantly and has become one of the most important health problems of the century. Treatment of obesity starts with comprehensive lifestyle management (i.e. diet, physical activity, behaviour modification) . Bariatric surgery is proved to be a successful treatment option leading to a long-term weight loss with improvement of obesity related comorbidities. Single Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (SAGB( has quickly become one of the most popular procedures in many countries The Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) is now one of the most popular bariatric procedure worldwide with rising prevalence over the last decade. The beneficial effect of bariatric surgery extends to include improvement in or even resolution of several other obesity-related comorbidities such as hypertension, dyslipidaemia, sleep apnea, and joint pain. Obesity is linked with a large range of medical complications. There is evidence that obesity is not only related to complication such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea, asthma, non alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteo arthritis and polycystic ovary syndrome, but also that weight reduction has beneficial effects and therefore is an integral part of treating these morbidities. Although there is a significant association between certain types of cancer and obesity, the inherent limitation of epidemiological studies in establishing causality, together with the lack of intervention studies, underline the need for further studies before the role of obesity in cancer is established
