Background: Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of
bacteria resistant to all β lactam antibiotics and it results in formation of small abscess and
progress to serious septic endocarditis. The dangers of death in patients with MRSA are
three times higher than other infections. Aim of the study: The present study aimed to
assess nurses' knowledge related to MRSA at Mansoura University child hospital. Subjects
and method: A descriptive exploratory research design was utilized to conduct this study
on seventy nurses who are associated with giving direct care for critically ill patients at
Mansoura University child hospital in Egypt. Data were collected through using nurses'
knowledge assessment questionnaire. Results: Most of nurses obtained unsatisfactory
knowledge concerning MRSA (74.3 %.). Moreover, there were significant differences
among nurses' knowledge by the demographic characteristics in their knowledge scores
regards age, years of working experience, educational level and attends training course.
Conclusion: It concluded that nurses had inadequate knowledge about MRSA.
Recommendations: Replication of this study on large probability sample, a continuous and
effective education should be provided for all nurses to enhance their knowledge about
MRSA and Periodic evaluation of nurses' knowledge regarding MRSA.
