Abstract

Vaccination against E. coli with two types of inactivated vaccine was carried out to study the immunogenicity in breeder hens and protection of the progeny from infection. Two groups of breeder hens were immunized with E.coli sonicated and formalized vaccines subcuteously at age of 20 and 25 weeks. Antibodies titre against E. coli were measured by ELISA and Indirect hemagglutination (IHT) tests for hens, eggs and hatched chicks at 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks post vaccination. Sonicated vaccine produced significantly higher titre (8.86 to 9.84), (8.1 to 8.86) and (8.81 to 6.8) than formalized vaccine (8.73 to 9.5), (7.8 to 8.56) and (7.66 to 6.1) in breeders, eggs and hatched chicks respectively. Moreover, immunized hens with sonicated vaccine had higher protection (80%) and body weight 390 gm than immunized hens with formalized vaccine (70%) and 379.5gm post challenge of chicks with homologous (O78) as well as heterologous strains of E.coli at14 days old. Feed conversion rate of chicks from vaccinated breeders with sonicated vaccine was significantly better than formalized vaccine. It is clear that immunization of breeder hens with sonicated or formalized E.coli vaccine protected the offspring with maternal antibodies from E. coli infection up to the fourth week of age.
