Spatial theory has been a field of interest in various scopes of study. It has begun in sociology and entered the literary field recently. The aim of this paper is to apply “place" and “space" as social constructions, which are both influenced by and exert influence on human beings, to Arundhati Ghosh's The Hungry Tide (2006) using Lefebvre's spatial theory. Moreover, Pierre Nora's concept of lieux de memoire will be introduced and used throughout the analysis since it is firmly connected to the spatial analysis and the historical approach, in that it explains how places can carry historical significance. Lastly, a short introduction to the field of ecocriticism will be provided, and the idea of nature as agentive will be explained and introduced.
