RURAL WOMEN'S CONSUMPTION OF DIFFFERENT FOOD ITEMS IN TWO VILLAGES FROM UPPER AND LOWER EGYPT

Abstract

The main objectives of this study were: 1- Determining the rural women consumption of food items in the two villages under study, and estimating the daily intakes of the rural women. 2- Finding out the differences between consumption averages of the different food items. Data were collected through personal interview with 226 women. Two villages were selected, one of them was from Upper Egypt ( Abal Wakf village of El-Menia governorate).However, the other represented Lower Egypt ( Demro village of Kafr-E1- Sheikh governorate).The study included 110 and 105 respondent from the two villages, respectively. The statistical analysis included percentages and "T" test to examine the differences between means. The results of this study revealed that: • Higher means of the consumed food items were found in Kafr-El-Sheikh villages i.e. fish, milk, rice, molasses, jam, vegetables, oils, margarine, carrot, lettuce, garden rocket, potatoes & sweet potatoes compared to El-Menia villages • Lower means of the consumed food items were observed in Kafr-El-Sheikh villages including red meets, beans, macaroni, bread, honey, ghee and dates than in El-Menia villages • There were significant differences in the rural women daily consumption of differences food items in the two studied areas for meat, fish, milk, beans, cereal groups, honey, molasses, jam, oils, carrot, lettuce, rocket, potatoes, sweet potatoes and dates. • The rural women daily intakes of some nutrients (calories, protein and fat) depended on plant sources Based on the results of this study, it could be recommended that initiating and conducting special nutrition would be essential programs for the rural women to enable them to correctly choose food items needed for growth & health of them and their families.
