Aim: This study was conducted to assess the benefit of systemic CoQ10 as an antioxidant in conjunction with scaling and root planing whether on the clinical parameters or the GCF levels of biochemical markers such as MMP9.
Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial was performed on 32 patients with stage II grade B periodontitis. The patients were randomly assigned into test group which was treated by non-surgical periodontal therapy with systemic administration of 30 mg CoQ10 twice daily for 3 months. The control group was treated by scaling and root planing only. Assessment of clinical parameters (PD and CAL) was performed at baseline and 3 months postoperatively. GCF samples were collected from the selected sites in both groups before periodontal therapy, 1 and 3 months postoperatively to assess matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) CGF level using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) commercial kit.
Results: Both groups showed a significant improvement in the clinical parameters in terms of decrease in PD and gain in CAL with a statistically significant difference between both groups in favor of the test group. Similarly, a significant decrease in MMP-9 levels in GCF was detected in both groups with a statistically significant difference between both groups in favor of the test group at 1 and 3 months.
Conclusions: The antioxidant action of CoQ10 offered an added benefit to the non-surgical periodontal therapy in terms of significant gain in CAL and reduction in both PD and MMP9 GCF levels.
